Mayer’s hematoxylin stain is primarily used as a nuclear stain to visualize cell nuclei in histological sections, most commonly as part of the standard Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stain where it stains the nuclei blue, while the cytoplasm is stained pink by eosin; it’s often used as a counterstain in special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures as well.
